Training Workshop 4: Public Outreach

PlaMatSu Workshop 4

 

The fourth PlaMatSu Workshop and Annual Meeting was held at the University of Cambridge from 16-18 September 2019, directly following the third workshop and third annual meeting of the previous week (10-13 September). All Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) met to discuss the PlaMatSu project.

The focus of this workshop was public outreach. There were individual sessions on a variety of topics related to public outreach, including public engagement, communication and exhibitions. Sessions included:

  • Half day workshop on how to engage with the public and methods used to do so

  • Half day workshop of mock presentations designed for a non-academic audience

  • Workshops on developing ideas for exhibitions to be held at botanic gardens and development of concept/materials plans

Practicalities

 

All ESR participants were expected to be present on Monday 16 September 2019 at 09:30hrs until Wednesday 18 September 2019 at 17:00hrs.

 

Travel

As all ESRs were already in Cambridge having attended Workshop 3 and Annual Meeting 3, no travel arrangements to Cambridge were required.

Accommodation

Accommodation was arranged for all ESRs at St Catharine's College, Cambridge (https://www.caths.cam.ac.uk/conferences/bed-and-breakfast).

Location: Cambridge University Botanic Garden

Following on from the third Annual Meeting on Friday 13 September 2019, Workshop 4 took place in the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. Workshop 4 was focused on public engagement training and the development of a concept and plan for materials for Botanic Garden exhibitions.

 

Programme:

Monday 16 September 2019

09:30-10:00          Welcome and Introductions

10:00-13:00          Introduction to Public Engagement and Science Communication workshop with Sarah Cruise and Lucinda Spokes (University of Cambridge Public Engagement professionals)

13:00-14:00          Lunch

14:00-17:00          Session with Graphic Artist Rebecca Osborne who will graphically interpret the research while it is being presented by students (Prep for this undertaken as part of morning workshop)

Return to hotel; everyone free for the evening. Cambridge has many restaurants ranging from reasonably priced to expensive.

 

Tuesday 17 September 2019

09:30-13:00          Full day bespoke workshop with artists and poets and social scientists from the SAW Trust to help develop ideas and materials for the exhibitions

13:00-14:00          Lunch

14:00-17:00          Full day bespoke workshop with artists and poets and social scientists from the SAW Trust to help develop ideas and materials for the exhibitions

Return to hotel; everyone free for the evening. Cambridge has many restaurants ranging from reasonably priced to expensive.

 

Wednesday 18 September 2019

09:30-12:00          Development of concept and plan for materials for the exhibition with Botanic Garden staff

12:00-13:00          Lunch

13:00-17:00          Presentation of concept and plan for materials for the Garden exhibitions to an independent Public Engagement professional in order to gather feedback and refine ideas & Close
